Succulent Plants That Require Direct Sunlight

Succulent Light Needs

Are you having trouble keeping your succulents alive without artificial light? It’s a problem that all gardeners eventually face. Most plants have a phase of life called the diurnal stage. This is the time that they are feeding, growing and spreading out. During this phase, most plants can go months without being subjected to artificial light.

However, if you grow them indoors, it is much easier to control their light requirements. Since they get most of their nourishment from the light they receive, you can supply them with as much light as you want. However, there are some succulents such as cacti and chrysanthemums that do best when kept in the outdoors. These types will not do well in low light environments.

Are you a newbie and wondering what type of succulents you should be growing indoors during the winter months? Well, what are your other options? Do you know that some succulents such as hydrangeas and some cacti can even handle partial to full sunlight? And there is no rule that says that you cannot grow these plants indoors?

Many indoor gardens have grown in the past few years thanks to the discovery of low light succulents such as the chrysanthemum. The chrysanthemum can tolerate a little bit of low light but it will do fine with high light conditions as well. Other popular indoor plants that are great for low light conditions are the orchid and the cyclamen.

There are a lot of different breeds of these plants that are available for purchase. These include the dwarf chrysanthemum, the star chrysanthemum, the false Cymbidium as well as many others. All of these succulents have their own specific needs when it comes to being cultivated in the right environment. Some of them require a lot of sunlight, while others prefer moderate to minimal sunlight.

The main types of low light succulents that you would want to grow indoors are the chrysanthemums and the cyclamen. The chrysanthemum can tolerate a little bit of light as long as it gets it in the morning. It also does not really like direct sunlight. The star chrysanthemum requires a fair amount of sunlight. The false cymbidium can tolerate direct sunlight but the rest of them prefer indirect sunlight.

What is important to keep in mind is that all of these types of succulents need light for them to grow properly. So what kind of lighting system will you be using? Some of them actually prefer metal halide lights.

Metal halide lights are actually considered as the best for low-light plants like succulents. It is not that they give out fewer amounts of light, but they tend to provide them with a good amount of nutrients. If you are planning to put the succulents in a greenhouse then you can always go for metal halide. What is important to do is to set up a system where there will be a sufficient amount of light coming into the room. You should also make sure that you have enough space in the greenhouse for the succulents to move around. You do not want to place them in a small area where they cannot spread their roots.

Succulent Light Needs

What about the other succulents like the spider plant and the moon plant? Both of these require less light but they are not suitable for low-light conditions. The spider plant needs direct sunlight per day, while the moon plant requires it under a partial shade. The moon plant is actually more suited to a full shade, since it will enjoy warm temperatures. Both of these succulents should be placed in a greenhouse. If you do not have one, you can actually place them on a terrace or a porch.

One type of low-light succulents may need additional light to survive. This is the soilless culture of the tobacco plant. They actually grow best in areas where there is no sunlight or very little. You need to water them once in a while. What you need to remember is that if you have plants that are prone to diseases then you need to give them light.

There are a lot more succulents that need direct sunlight. In fact, most of them require it for their growth. These include the Java fern and the pitiflora. Most of the time, you do not need to provide them with enough light since they tend to be low-maintenance plants. If you want to provide them with enough light, you can try putting them in a raised bed. This is especially good for those that are not very easy to grow.
